Repair and Enhancement of ABC Funding is a Long Game

With the Labor Government firmly in power, the medium-term future of the ABC is secure. A commitment to 5-year funding and an extra $50 million over three years for Australian content are welcome decisions. But the ABC’s funding base is still well behind its 2015 baseline. And the demands on its resources keep growing as it navigates the web of digital delivery services. With the Federal budget under pressure in a cost-of-living crisis, repair and enhancement of the ABC’s funding is now a longer game. ABC Alumni is staying the course, targeting in its research and advocacy the benefits of additional funding to areas of current concern: the ABC’s critical role in emergency broadcasting; its unmatched capacity to report from regional areas across Australia as commercial media cut costs and centralise; and the invaluable contribution of ABC international to Australia’s soft power. Also in our sights are the ongoing threats to media freedom, and attacks on the ABC’s integrity.
